THE THIRD CHAKRA – THE SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA also known as MANIPURA

The last few weeks, client’s issues have centred on stress and digestive problems, so I thought I would share some information about the chakra that governs these physical ailments.

Disclaimer: The information provided below is not a substitute for traditional medical treatment. If you have a serious health imbalance, please refer to your doctor or other appropriate professional and use this information as complementary healing for holistic wellbeing. My primary efforts are directed in sharing information and helping others discover and understand how our thoughts and energies affect our health and wellbeing.

ASSOCIATION: Adrenal glands and the pancreas. Manipura directs energy to the islets of Langerhans which is located in the pancreas.

HEALTH ISSUES: Predominately stress also, digestive problems, diabetes, cancer.

PHYSICAL: Digestive system, immune system and nervous system. This chakra is a fusion of a variety of energies and named after the complex of nerves located in the solar plexus. It is also connected to the spine’s lumbar vertebrae.

DIGESTION: The stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, duodenum and small intestine are linked to the solar plexus. All of these organs need to work in harmony for successful digestion and assimilation and absorption of nutrients.

IMMUNE SYSTEM: The immune system stores and categorises data about the body’s encounters for instance, the body recognises a virus as something to be fought and activates its defence mechanism to overcome infection. Should the body recognise the same virus at a later date it has the information to prevent a severe attack.

Poor identification is also related to allergies and intolerances, failure in recognising and consequently neglecting to fight an infection, failure to recognise the body’s own enzymes, hormones or neurotransmitters and failure to recognise minerals and vitamins needed to be absorbed by the small intestine.

The digestive, nervous and immune systems, and the brain and its memory functions, all depend on the solar plexus chakra.

This chakra is also the centre of emotional stability and the area of personal power, hope and optimism. Tension affects the solar plexus and causes stomach problems. The colour yellow supports positivity and accesses personal initiative, so wear yellow clothing or carry yellow crystals such as Citrine. Refer to the list below for other helpful crystals to wear or hold.

EMOTIONAL: The solar plexus chakra is governed by our thoughts. Fear is the key negative emotion that drives all others. We feel fear when we lack control in a situation, making it difficult for us to relax. We imagine all sorts of scenarios which can escalate our feelings of fear and anxiety. To help relieve fear, we need to learn to accept things as they are rather than trying to control the situation.

As children we are reliant on authority figures such as our parents or teachers. If they used their authority to dominate and instil behaviour and thought patterns that take our personal power from us, the solar plexus chakra becomes effectively blocked. When we fail to comply with this dominance, criticism and punishment is often used bringing with it, feelings of shame. We often replay their critical comments well into adulthood and believe these internal conversations of the past, preventing us from moving forward and using our personal power.

Fear and shame are issues of personal power and prevents us, at an emotional level to work with the solar plexus.

MENTAL: This chakra enables us to create our own personal heaven or hell, by working on how we manage our thoughts and our belief in self, which is critical to our health and wellbeing. Our memory and learning plays a significant role with this chakra. Our body and mind records our experiences, cataloguing and retrieving this information when similar situations arise. If we develop negative belief systems, brought about by others’ comments and criticisms about ourselves and the world around us, we learn to create blocks around these and similar issues, creating disharmony and stress for us, when our bodies recognise and retrieve these past experiences. These stresses build up, blocking the solar plexus chakra and often results in physical, emotional and mental difficulties. To unblock this chakra we need to unlearn any outdated and inaccurate belief systems about ourselves and the world around us, handed down to us by others.

SPIRITUAL: The solar plexus chakra relates to personal growth, defining ourselves and our boundaries. Knowing what we are and what we are not. When we awaken from the negative self-beliefs placed upon us by other’s criticism, our next step is to move forward and change how we see and judge ourselves and others. True progress is accepting that we are owed nothing from the world. Issues of the solar plexus are often related to how we perceive ourselves and others. If our experiences lead us to believe we are inferior, our lives reflect this in many ways and therefore, reinforce this belief. Similarly, if we believe we are superior, we miss opportunities to learn from the wisdom of others and overlook our own shortcomings. The circumstances may be the same in both situations however one person will focus on their failures whilst the other, on success.

The role of the solar plexus chakra at a spiritual level is to realise that extreme judgements of self, limits us. We need to see ourselves with a broader, balanced perspective and allow the fire of the solar plexus, shine brightly within us.

SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA TABLE:

COLOUR: Yellow

ELEMENT: Fire (3 meanings; the Sun, our inner fire and Spirit). Manipura can be thought of as the Sun in your body, generating power within.

KEY ISSUES: Personal energy, power, stress, fear, anxiety, introversion.

CHAKRA LOCATION: Between navel and bottom of the sternum (main region of the body that reacts to stress).

HELPFUL CRYSTALS TO WEAR OR HOLD: Yellow or gold stones clear thoughts, reduces anxiety and improves confidence. Citrine, topaz and tiger eye work well with this chakra. Amber is a soothing stone it corrects imbalances in the nervous system, helpful for detoxification and reduces confusion and anxiety. Iron Pyrites (Fool’s gold) is beneficial to the digestive system and helps eliminate toxins. As an iron ore, it helps with grounding when feeling anxiety that contributes to depression and frustration. Where anxiety is contributing to digestive problems, pyrites can help reduce tension. Gold is a great conductor of energy and creates easy energy flow to release stress from the nervous system, increases brain efficiency and repairs damaged tissues. Gold’s positive effect on the heart chakra and thymus gland strengthens the immune system. A 24 carat piece of jewellery can be used. Yellow varieties of fluorite, feldspar, beryl and tourmalines rebalance the solar plexus chakra. Those with a warm orange yellow are relaxing and work best with the digestive system and those of a lemon yellow hue are effective in clearing the mind and nervous system, encouraging clarity and mental alertness.
